9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance with Elders in Action at Multnomah County CROPS

A Common Field One Day.... A Field of Honor Forever

8-31-2010

Join us for "A Common Field One Day", a 9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance for the individuals on United Airlines Flight 93 who became extraordinary heroes before crashing in a common field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. Elders in Action will observe this day by leading a group of volunteers in harvesting a common field at the Multnomah County CROPS farm. The goal of the day is to harvest fresh organic vegetables to go in food boxes for people living in low income circumstances. There will be time set aside for remembrance and reflection about the heroes of 9/11.

Multnomah County CROPS is an emergency food garden grown on underutilized Multnomah County surplus property that is being farmed to grow fresh, local, and organic produce for hungry Oregon families. Produce is then distributed through the Oregon Food Bank network to provide hunger relief to our local community during the current economic crisis.

Established in 2009 by surviving family members and support groups, the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is a way to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 and to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that followed the attacks. Passed with strong bipartisan support, it was signed into law by President Obama in April, 2009.

Individuals or groups can volunteer to be part of this special event by contacting Mark Noonan at Elders in Action, 503-235-5474.

Sponsoring the event are OregonVolunteers!, AARP Oregon, and the Corporation for National & Community Service.
