Older Adults Like Elder Friendly Business Certification

The Elder Friendly Business Certification decal tells you that the business has passed rigorous standards of accessibility, customer service and layout. The Elder Friendly Business Certification Program is a nationally recognized program that has been replicated in 13 cities in 9 states.


Benefits to Older Adults

  • Identifies which businesses have met Elder Friendly standards.
  • Promotes independent living by enabling the older customer to complete his/her business and shopping with relative ease.
  • Empowers the older volunteer by providing the opportunity to share observations for improving access and customer service of businesses.
  • Promotes a relationship among aging agencies, businesses and older adults in the community.

How You Can Help

  • Let your Area Agency on Aging or other community organization know about the nationally recognize program. Not all communities have the Elder Friendly Certification program.   • Become an Elder Friendly volunteer. Contact your local licensed agency to become involved with the program. Sponsoring agencies are located here. As a trained Elder Friendly evaluator, you will be sent "undercover" to evaluate a business. Once you complete your evaluation, your score will be combined with others to determine if the business meets Elder Friendly standards.
  • Patronize Elder Friendly businesses. Click here for the current business directory. Look for the Elder Friendly decal on businesses and websites. Let them know you appreciate that they are Elder Friendly certified.
  • Recruit new businesses to get involved with the program. Talk with business managers and encourage them to join the growing ranks of the nationally recognized Elder Friendly Certification Program.
